Emily and Michael | Top of the Town Wedding | Arlington Wedding Photography

I had the good fortune to go to UVa with both of these fine people.  Mike and I studied (and possibly forgot) mechanical engineering together, and I got to know Emily separately through living across the hall from her on campus.  I was honored when they asked me to photograph their Northern Virginia wedding at the end of March this year.  This post has some of my favorite images from their wedding.

Emily began her wedding day by getting rid of the family dog…. but only temporarily… and with a wonderful friend of the family.  We then had full reign of the house to get ready…

Hannah here flew in from New Zealand  for the wedding – she definitely wins the long distance award – and was a huge help throughout the day.

The big reveal to Tom, Emily’s father…

The ceremony was held in the historic Wakefield Chapel, Annandale, VA.  We could not have asked for better weather – blue skies with sunlight pouring in through the large chapel windows…

Meanwhile, backstage…

Go time!

Emily and Mike had allotted over 2 HOURS for photos between the ceremony and reception,  which (1) flew by, but (2) allowed us to make a couple of really fun stops to get a variety of group photos.  First stop on the photo tour was the Crystal City water park…

I asked Mike to look a little bit serious, and it took all of 3 seconds for Emily to fix that 🙂

Emily and Mike’s reception venue was very close to the Iwo Jima memorial, so we decided to take a few more shots there on the way…

Flying V?  Yes, oh yes.

Many thanks to Greg Keysar, for this excellent shot and many others.  Not to mention helping us drive all over town 🙂

The view of the Washington monument and national mall is absolutely stellar from the Iwo Jima memorial – can’t believe I had never been there before!

Returning to the limos for the short ride to the reception.  Top of the town is actually the top floor (awesome!) of the building in the background in this image.

We arrived at Top of the Town and as the sun set, we made our way to a great spot for portraits.  Even managed to get Mr Jefferson’s monument in the upper right background (insert obligatory “Go Hoos!”)…

Long exposures of the iconic DC skyline, the view from Top of the Town’s outdoor terrace.  Seriously, can this place get any cooler?

Welcome and toasts…

Check out the impressive jump Hannah makes to grab Emily’s bouquet.  What are they feeding kids over there in New Zealand!?

Dancing ensues…

I love this moment with Emily and her grandmother Jo…

Finally, a sendoff under a hand bridge that seemed about 200 arms strong…

Emily and Mike – congratulations!  Hope you guys had a blast in Costa Rica, and thanks again for asking me along for your wedding.  I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: it was an honor.  I had so much fun catching up with you guys and I’m happy to know that you’re staying in the area.  Best of luck, and I’ll see you around!  – Ben

Hey Ben, have just viewed your beautiful images and really enjoyed the insider’s peep into the special prep time at Tom and Janet’s house before the wedding, what a treat. Thank you so much for your sensitive handling of such a special day and also for the kind way you related to my daughter Hannah during the whole day – you have captured some really beautiful images of her that my husband Tim and I will always cherish.
    Kindest regards, Trish
